Porridge Perfection: Top 6 bowls to try in Canberra
Porridge. The classic staple enjoyed by people all over the world for hundreds of years. We have come a long way since then, with impressive flavours and creative toppings transforming the simple oat.
As the weather gets colder in the nation's capital, soul-warming bowls emerge from all the fab cafes.
Here are my top 6 favourite porridge dishes that Canberra has to offer this winter:
1. Urban Pantry, Manuka
Who doesn't love apple crumble? This wholesome dish did the trick to warm me up on this particularly chilly morning. Salty-sweet crumble garnished over apples, raspberry coulis and topped with fat blueberries.
2. Eighty Twenty, Braddon
This pistachio-packed bowl of happiness features a juicy whole poached spiced pear surrounded with bright cranberries. Your spoon will glide through that pear like a knife through butter. Delish.
3. Penny University, Kingston
This is an all time favourite of mine. The spiced almond milk and black barley porridge is an alternative to oats, but still has the creamy, wholesome texture to keep you satisfied until lunch. Served with a vegan coconut panna cotta and fresh passionfruit. Penny University, you've done it again.
4. Doubleshot, Deakin
This is for the vegans! Chai-spiced porridge, caramelised banana, blackberries, buckinis and candied pecans. The perfect combination of crunch and juicy fruit.
5. Maple and Clove, Barton
Almond milk soaked oats cooked with cinnamon, nutmeg and maple syrup. This is packed full of spice, finished with blueberries, banana, cranberries and seeds. It's a massive serving and would be perfect to share.
6. A Bite To Eat, Chifley
Warm sour cherry porridge. This beauty is topped with crunchy biscuit, poached cherries, star anise and colourful edible flowers. Almost too pretty to eat.
Happy porridge hunting this Winter. If you know of anywhere in the capital that serves up a hearty bowl, leave a comment.
