Snowy Mountains Part 2: Jindabyne

Eat

Birchwood

Located on Gippsland Street, Birchwood is popular among foodies, known for their attractive, photo-worthy food presentations. They’re open seven days and serve Axis Rosters beans, a creation from right here in Canberra.

Using fresh, seasonal produce, the big ticket items on the menu consist of green pesto eggs, spiced dahl, apple and raspberry sweet treat, snowy mountains smoked trout, Three Mills breads, smashed avo with roast potato and damn good burgers. Keep an eye out for their daily specials, which have a history of being coconut, cinnamon + mango porridge, and smoked salmon on dark rye. YUM.

Get in early, or be prepared for a short wait, because it’s extremely popular during peak season!

The Red Door Roastery

Cosy and inviting, walking into The Red Door Roastery feels like a big warm hug. The coffee is fantastic and roasted on-site by the family-owned business.

Apart from a fab chino, there is also breakfast, lunch and homemade sweets to enjoy. It’s ironic, but look for the big red door!

Serge’s

Fat juicy burgers, monster muffins, thickshakes, sambos, fresh juices, salads, hot chips. Serge’s may be a small hole in the wall, but they always deliver huge flavours and a satisfying feed.

You can sit down on the big tables out front, or if you’re keen to get on the road to beat the snow traffic, most dishes can be taken away. My go-to is the Cajun chicken burger after a big day on the slopes.

The Market

If bacon and eggs aren’t your thing, and you prefer to get your sustenance from wholefoods and vegan treats, The Market is for you. As well as providing a relaxed café section with lounges and coffee tables, the rest of the store is an ethical grocer with shelves full of organic beauty products, cookware and all sorts of yummy snacks.

You will find The Market on Snowy River Avenue.

Parc Café Jindy

Did you know there is a sun-drenched, bustling café hidden within the bluestone walls of the Jindabyne Information Centre? Fat Poppy coffee from Marrickville, Sydney is the roast of choice at the popular location, and while you wait, take a look at the historic artefacts encased in glass displays from around the Snowy Mountains area.

The large counter and coffee machine are positioned in front of an impressive stone fireplace that has been transformed into shelving. Brekkie is until 11.30am, and you can grab some avocado + fetta smash, creamy porridge, house-made granola, corn fritters or baked beans on organic sourdough toast. From 12pm, some lunch eats include a southern fried chicken burger, corned beef Rueben, red braised pork belly salad and beer battered fish.

Fresh juices and smoothies are available, as well as wine and beer! Hooray!
