Snowy Mountains Part 1: Thredbo Village
Thredbo village
With eclectic eateries, bars, sophisticated restaurants, unique shops, day spas, convenient accommodation and pumping nightlife, Thredbo Village has plenty to offer while you’re not on the slopes.
eat
Central Road 2625
This cute cafe in the heart of the village is a thriving brunch spot, pumping out coffees and eggs by day, and serving dinner and craft beers by night.
Slightly Asian-inspired, wholesome dishes such as Singapore Chilli Crab, curries and Pork Nasi Goring are up for the taking. Brekkie is on offer until 11.30am with Canadian pancakes, vegetarian bruschetta and an epic breakfast burrito.
The Bakery in the Village Square
A classic with the families, the Thredbo Village Bakery is an all-rounder for fussy eaters with plenty of homemade bread, pies, quiches, sweet pastries, sandwiches, sweets and fresh coffee.
A constant flurry of hungry bellies sweep in and out, positioning themselves in the sun on the long outdoor tables, or inside where the smell of freshly baked bread wafts through the air.
Located in the Village Square, just look for the stone entrance and satisfied customers re-fuelling
out the front. Stools inside offer a cosy nook to sit with a view out to the hustle and bustle of village crowds.
Local Pub
Aussie pub grub at the base of the mountain. You can enjoy a parmy, nachos, steak, chips, snitty, famous London pot pie or a healthy burrito bowl, while you watch skiers and boarders zip down the mountain face before your eyes.
The huge menu will keep little ones happy with lots of kids options and big share plates of chips, wedges and nachos. This is definitely the pick of the lot if you have a young family and picky eaters.
Big picnic tables and long stools cover the large front deck if you want to eat and drink in the crisp air, or you can sit at an old-school booth inside near the pool tables and licensed bar. The Pub also transforms into a busy hot spot for party-goers by night.
Cascades
If you’re feeling fancy, you can enjoy modern cuisine with sweeping views at Cascades. Truffle and wagyu beef burger, Cowra lamb shoulder, grilled spatchcock, fresh oysters and Lake Eucumbene trout are a few of the mouthwatering dishes on the menu this season.
You can also grab a buffet breakfast from 7am before you hit the slopes, lunch from 12pm and dinner from 5.30pm.
Segreto Italian
Hidden in the depths of the Thredbo Alpine Hotel in a small, romantically-lit room, is the new Segreto Italian restaurant. The latest addition to the village has only been open for a month, and has quickly become a favourite among visitors.
Upon entering the discrete door within the Alpine Hotel, the smell of fresh, bold Italian flavours greet you. You can enjoy a huge range of cocktails, wines and beer along with classics such as porchetta, gnocchi, woodfired pizzas, hearty steaks and warm crusty bread.
A must-try cocktail after a cold day on the mountain is the hot Spiced Buttered Whiskey. It will be sure to relax you! Perfect with the Panna Cotta, Apple + Rhubarb Crumble or Fig Tart to finish.
NOTE: We stayed at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel, which is home to Local Pub, Cascades and Segreto, so we explored these locations. There are some fantastic places to eat, drink and party that are also nearby, such as Keller Bar, Schuss Bar, Merrits Mountain House, Kareela Hutte, Thredbo Burger Bar, Sante Churrasco and Black Bear Inn. If you want to eat at the highest restaurant in Australia, then hop on the Kosciuszko chairlift and head to Eagles Nest.
shop
JK Gallery + Mountain Shop
This is for the upmarket shoppers who appreciate fine art, animal furs and grand alpine interiors. Stunning photographs of the Snowy Mountains region grace the walls above shaggy mountain sheep’s wool pillows, throw rugs and mats.
Burton
For the shredders. The new Burton snowboard store opened at the beginning of the 2019 season and does not disappoint. This is the first Australian store for Burton, joining the list of shopfronts in Queenstown, Los Angeles, Innsbruck and Niseko.
The large windows allow plenty of natural light on to the old Turkish-syle rugs on the wooden floorboards. The shop has a relaxed feel with spots to try on boots or to simply plonk down and have a chat with the helpful staff.
The latest styles of Burton threads, boards, bindings and accessories are on show, and you’re guaranteed to leave with something radical.
Look for the bright neon sign out the front, located opposite Central Road 2625 in the Village Square.
Stay
Thredbo Alpine Hotel
Ah the Alpine Hotel. Stone feature walls and wooden beams allow you to feel cosy and warm while providing a classic alpine experience.
Modern furnishings and edgy lounges create a boutique feel to the old pastime of Thredbo, which was originally built in 1963.
Many a party has been had since then! There is a large outdoor entertaining area with gas fires and lounges positioned in front of a stage and thriving bar, perfect to keep you warm and relaxed during the many gigs from local and travelling artists.
The hotel is home to three great eateries; Cascades, Sagretto and The Alpine Hotel Pub, which will keep you satisfied from a classic pub feed to a sophisticated Italian pasta dish.
The Denman Hotel
The Denman has a lot going on. You can eat at the fantastic Terrace Restaurant, party at the Apres Bar or have a massage at the day spa. The Village is at your door if you want to explore during the day, or stay close to the slopes.
The rooms have plenty of light, with some offering private balconies with epic views. For the boarders and skiers, there are storage facilities for gear.
You will find awesome live music, tasty cocktails, craft beers and a happy crowd downstairs at the Apres Bar. Big nights have been had here for over 20 years, and continues to provide good times for visitors and locals.
