Creators Nest: A unique space in Yass

Yass. The humble town within an hour’s drive from Canberra. As it’s population grows, so do the small businesses dreamed up by local creatives. One in particular hides behind the original doors of a charming Oddfellows Hall originally opened in 1887.

Creators Nest is a thriving hub of talent that acts as both a co-working location for artisans, and a retail space for the public to admire and purchase stunning handmade pieces.

As you walk through the front doors, a spectacular hallway greets you with pale pink archways and dark timber floorboards. The style of the building is said to be a ‘classic’ representation of Australian Oddfellows Hall architecture.

The twin staircase leads up to the main hall that sits beyond rustic draped lace curtains. It’s like stepping into a world of wonder. Handmade clothes, bags, jewellery, art, felt creations, baskets, furs, pottery, soaps, hats and wall decorations are just some of the special items that you will find inside.

You will meet the lovely Marie-Nicole who is in her element within the space, which she developed for ‘inspiration, immersion and discovery’. A vibrant and warm personality, she is the brains behind Creators Nest.

Work spaces are available for selected artists on either sides of the room, with classic sewing machines and large desks offering plenty of areas for the creative juices to flow.

Double doors lead out to a huge balcony with wrought iron trimming over the main street. Large windows allow natural light to spill over the beautifully styled shelves and tables inside, making the old hall feel cosy even on a Wintery day.

A light, airy room out the back is used for meetings and workshops, which are run by Marie-Nicole when she’s not busy producing stunning leatherwork and unique guitar cases made from recycled wool blankets.
